Pastorale is a special album in many ways. Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel set out to create, in Rumbel's words, "an album of intimate music...to give people an opportunity to find a calm place within themselves." Rumbel composed "Reverence," the last track on the disc, in memory of her father, Joe E. Rumbel, who passed away on January 19, 1997. (It is one of the sweetest compositions one might ever hear.) She also dedicates her performance on this CD to him. Tingstad & Rumbel achieved their goal. This is a very gentle, dignified, and playful soundscape. Rumbel's sense of humor shines, and Tingstad's exuberance sparkles. This peaceful gem is irresistible. It will appeal to fans of David Darling, Hans Christian, Lisa Lynne, and Suzanne Ciani.

Like the two albums (American Acoustic and Pastorale) that preceded it, Paradise by Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel offers listeners the audio equivalent of a comfortable sweater and a favorite pair of jeans. The two veteran musicians continue to blend folk's expressive spirit with the meticulous nature of chamber music in ways that yield serene, instantly appealing backdrops for reading, watching the sun rise, or warming a gathering of friends in front of a fireplace. Gone is the duo's midcareer experimentation with energized, ensemble-based settings; what remains is the pair's core sound--Tingstad's sonorous acoustic guitars gracefully intertwined with Rumbel's lyrical passages for oboe, English horn, and ocarinas, embellished here with light percussion. Gentle almost to a fault at times, Paradise is nevertheless amply supplied with pleasant melodies: the sweet breezes flowing through "Sailing", the Spanish-tinged romance of "As You Wish", and pair of engaging pop-classical hybrids, "The Lowcountry" and "Rokeby". Highlights: the inviting Middle Eastern flair that adorns a tribute to Ofra Haza ("Ofra") and Tingstad's animated "The Lawnmower Song".

Libera is a London-based choir of boys – 24 on this recording. Although they sing in the style of the great English boys' choirs, their repertoire on CD consists almost exclusively of arrangements of popular classics – the slow movement of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, Caccini's Ave Maria, and so on – and original works by their director Robert Prizeman. There are lush but largely unobtrusive electronic (i.e., synthesized) accompaniments, although occasionally a "trance" beat is added, which I can take or leave. What Russell Watson is to tenors, Libera is to boys' choirs. That is not meant as an insult. The singers are well-prepared, and their voices are spectacularly pure and beautiful. They wear white robes, but to my eyes, the robes look more like "hoodies." While one might cluck disapprovingly over Libera in theory, it is hard to do so in practice!

New age neo-classicists Libera established their artistic niche by updating choral pieces with ethereal electronic orchestration and theatrical musical sweeps on their self-titled debut album, and the 2001 release Luminosa continues these themes. In interpreting Handel, Beethoven, Saint-Saлns, and Debussy among others, director and producer Robert Prizeman is working from a base of some of the finest compositions in history, so it is no surprise that the pieces are as moving as they are. The alternately haunting and embracing "Ave Maria," assisted greatly by the almost impossibly angelic vocals of soloist Steven Geraghty, swirls through imagined marble halls, echoing brightly through Prizeman's production, while the title track reverberates with delicate harmonies and intricate harp-based orchestration. While some listeners may trouble themselves by asking exactly which elements are organic and which are synthesized, those who can let slip the reins of analysis and release themselves into the music will be gently swept away.
